Halloween criss-cross puzzle

Halloween words are awkward to spell, and a criss-cross is the puzzle that makes that awkwardness the point. CAULDRON, SKELETON and PUMPKIN all have letter clusters children get wrong in ordinary writing, and here a wrong letter is not a red mark from a teacher, it is a word further down the grid that will not go in.

The self-correcting part matters more than it sounds. In most spelling work a child writes the word, hands it in, and finds out later whether it was right. In a criss-cross they find out immediately, from the puzzle rather than from an adult, and they go back and fix it themselves. That is a different experience of being wrong.

It also holds a room longer than the alternatives. A word search is over when the last word is circled and the fast finishers are done in three minutes. A criss-cross has one solution and getting there takes trial and error, so a class party sheet stays occupied for a useful length of time rather than emptying out at once.

Nothing on these sheets is gory and there are no character names from films or games. The four grids step up from ten words to twenty, and the maker will take your own list if the class has been reading something with better vocabulary in it.
