An easy maze is not just a small one. What makes a maze approachable is the width of the corridor relative to the pencil, and how often the route forks. Twelve squares across on a sheet of Letter paper gives corridors wide enough for a crayon, which matters more than most people expect, a child who keeps crossing the walls is fighting the paper, not the puzzle.
The sheets here run from eight to fourteen squares. Eight is genuinely a first maze: a handful of turns, a couple of dead ends, finished in under a minute. Fourteen takes a few minutes and starts to reward looking ahead rather than guessing.
These are worth having for pencil control as much as for the puzzle. Staying inside a corridor is fine motor practice that does not feel like practice, which is a rare thing. For that use the wider sizes are better than the harder ones, you want a steady line, not a child squeezing through gaps.
Every maze has exactly one route through, so a wrong turn always ends in a dead end rather than looping back on itself. If none of the four sheets is quite right, the generator makes one at any size from eight squares upward.
Common questions
My child keeps drawing through the walls. Is the maze too hard?
Almost certainly not. That is a corridor-width problem rather than a difficulty one. Print the eight-square sheet, where the corridors are widest, and offer a pencil rather than a thick crayon. A fat crayon in a narrow corridor makes a careful child look careless.
How long does one of these actually take?
The eight-square sheet is usually under a minute, which is the point of it: a first maze should be finished rather than survived. Fourteen squares runs to a few minutes and starts to reward looking ahead instead of guessing.
Is there always a way through?
Yes, and there is exactly one. Every maze is generated so that all squares connect and no route loops back on itself, which means a wrong turn always ends in a dead end rather than sending you round in a circle.
Where is the answer?
On page two of the PDF, printed as a line through the maze. It is on a separate sheet so you can hand out the puzzle and keep the solution.
What size suits a young child?
Easy, at twelve squares. The corridors are wide enough for a crayon and the route is short enough to finish in a couple of minutes. If that is still hard, use the stepper to go down to ten or nine squares.
Can I get a different maze at the same difficulty?
Press New maze. It generates a completely different layout at the same size, so you can print a set where no two children have the same puzzle.
Do you have circular mazes?
Not yet, rectangular only for now. Round mazes are a different drawing problem and we would rather ship one shape that prints properly than two that half work.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up and no watermark. Mazes are generated in your browser, so nothing you make is sent to us.
