Halloween bingo covers the hour before trick-or-treating, which is the hardest hour of the evening: everyone is in costume, nobody can eat yet, and the light has not gone. It needs a pencil and nothing else, and it survives a noisy room.

The lists are pumpkins, sweets, costumes, black cats and cobwebs rather than anything genuinely frightening, so the cards suit a four year old as readily as a class of ten year olds. The sets run to eight, sixteen and thirty cards, with a shorter 3 × 3 for a quicker round.

The 3 × 3 has a second use worth knowing about. Printed small and handed out at the door, it turns the walking between houses into a game: mark off a witch, a carved pumpkin, a black cat, a house that has given up and left a bowl out.

If your party has its own vocabulary, the maker below takes your list and builds the same guaranteed-different cards from it. Costumes the children chose weeks ago are worth putting on a card.

Common questions

Is this too frightening for younger children?

No. The list is pumpkins, sweets, costumes and black cats rather than anything genuinely spooky, and the border is drawn in the same friendly line as the rest of the site. Nothing on the card would upset a four year old.

Can we play this while trick-or-treating?

It is one of the better uses of it. Print the 3 × 3 cards, hand one to each child, and mark things off as you see them on the street: a witch, a carved pumpkin, a black cat. It occupies the walking between houses, which is the part that usually drags.

How many words do I need?

At least 24 for a 5 × 5 card, or nine for a 3 × 3. The 5 × 5 needs 24 rather than 25 because the middle square is free. Around 30 to 40 words gives genuinely varied cards.

Are the cards really all different?

Yes. Each card is checked against every card already in the set before it is added, so duplicates cannot slip through. If your word list is too small to make the number you asked for, the tool tells you how many are actually possible rather than quietly repeating.

Is there a free square?

On the 5 × 5 cards, in the middle, as usual. The 3 × 3 cards do not have one, with only nine squares a free one makes the game too short.

How many cards can I make at once?

Up to 40 in a single PDF, which covers most classes and parties. They print two to a page at the standard size.

Can I use my own words?

Yes, choose Write my own and type or paste your list. Guest names, spelling words, vocabulary terms, anything. Your list stays in your browser and is never sent to us.

Do I need an account?
