Halloween bingo covers the hour before trick-or-treating, which is the hardest hour of the evening: everyone is in costume, nobody can eat yet, and the light has not gone. It needs a pencil and nothing else, and it survives a noisy room.

The forty words run from four letters (BATS, OWLS, MOON, MASK) to nine (GRAVEYARD and SCARECROW), and many sit on the friendly side of the night, such as PUMPKIN, CANDY, CARAMEL and COSTUME, so the cards suit a four year old with an adult reading the calls as readily as a class of ten year olds. The sets run to eight, sixteen and thirty cards, with twelve shorter 3 × 3 cards for a quicker round.

The 3 × 3 has a second use worth knowing about. Printed small and handed out at the door, it turns the walking between houses into a game: mark off a witch, a carved pumpkin, a black cat, a house that has given up and left a bowl out.

Can one game of Halloween bingo pay out for a line and a full card

Yes: keep calling after the first line and the same Halloween cards go on to a full card, which with the sixteen-card set comes after about 37 of the 40 calls, against roughly 13 for the first line. That gap gives two prizes from one game without reprinting anything. With eight cards the line takes about 15 calls and with thirty about 12, while the full card stays near 37 whichever set you use. A card is only full once all 24 of its words have been called, and with just 16 words left off each card that rarely happens before the mid-thirties.

At one call every fifteen seconds, which gives children in costume time to find the word, the line arrives in a little over three minutes and the full card in about nine. The 3 × 3 quick game works differently. Its twelve cards have nine words each and no free square, so a line comes after about nine calls but a full card takes around 30, which is a long wait for a small card: play that set to a line. CAULDRON and TRICKS appear on none of its twelve cards, so cross them off the call list before you begin.

Which Halloween bingo words can the caller act out instead of reading

Six of the forty Halloween bingo words are sounds or movements a caller can perform rather than say: HOWLING, WHISPER, THUNDER (a drum roll on the table), RATTLE, SHIVER and CREAKY (a slow door noise). An acted call becomes a listening puzzle, because the player has to turn the sound into a word and then find that word written on the card, which suits children who are only starting to read. A whispered call also has the useful effect of quieting a party for a moment. Older children can take a turn as caller and mime the rest: a broom ride for BROOM, bared teeth for FANGS, a pointed hat for WITCH.

Several pairs look alike on a crowded card, and that matters once children are marking their own. CREEPY and CREAKY are both six letters, both start with CRE and both end in Y. MOON sits inside MOONLIT, GHOST and GHOULISH share their first three letters, and TRICKS and TREATS are both six letters that start with TR and end in S. WITCH and WIZARD part company after the second letter. Before anyone is declared the winner, ask them to read their line back aloud word by word, so a CREAKY marked on a call of CREEPY is caught before the prize is handed over.

Common questions

Is this too frightening for younger children?

No: the darkest words on the list are GRAVEYARD, SKELETON, HAUNTED, LURKING and GHOULISH, and none of the forty is gory. If one of them still feels wrong for your group, type your own list into the maker below and leave it out, since a 5 × 5 card needs only 24 words. The ready-made sets print plain, with no decorative frame around the cards.

Can we play this while trick-or-treating?

Yes, and the twelve 3 × 3 quick game cards are the set to take, one per child. Not every word can be spotted from the sidewalk, though: a card may pair CANDY and LANTERN with THUNDER and MIDNIGHT, so agree before you set off that a sound heard or a glance at a clock counts as a mark. For a card of nothing but sights, type nine or more things you expect to pass into the maker below.
