Birthday is the one theme here with no season attached, which makes it the most reliably useful list on the site. Every class has a birthday most weeks, and the same sheet works in January and July.
It earns its place at a party rather than a desk. Printed a few times and left on the table, a word search occupies the twenty minutes between arriving and eating, which is the hardest twenty minutes of any children’s party.
The words are short and concrete, and most children can read them already: balloon, candle, cake, prizes. That makes this a confidence list rather than a stretching one, which is the right choice when the puzzle is meant to be a treat.
The same list drives the bingo maker, and that is arguably the better party use. Twenty-four of these words on a card, someone calling them out, and you have a game rather than a worksheet.
Common questions
Can this be used at the party itself?
It is one of the better sheets for the waiting, which every party has: after arriving and before the food. It needs a pencil and nothing else, it survives noise, and a child who finishes early has something to do that is not opening the presents.
Can I put the birthday child’s name in it?
Not on the ready-made sheets, but the maker above takes your own list, so a minute of typing gets their name, their friends’ names and whatever the party is themed around. A sheet with the guests on it holds a room far better than a generic one.
How many words can I use?
Up to twenty-five. Ten to fifteen is comfortable for most grids. If you add more than the grid can hold, the tool tells you which words did not fit rather than silently leaving them out.
Why did one of my words not fit?
Either it is longer than the grid is wide, or the grid filled up before it could be placed. Try the next size up, remove a word, or press New puzzle for a different arrangement, a word that fails one layout often places fine in the next.
Can I make it easier for younger children?
Yes. Set difficulty to Easy so words only run left to right and top to bottom, and use a 10 by 10 grid with five to eight short words. That combination is manageable for most children who can read the words on the list.
Is there an answer key?
Always, and it prints on its own page so you can hand out the puzzle without it. Each answer is marked directly on a copy of the grid.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up, no email, and no watermark on the printed sheet. Puzzles are built in your browser, so your word list never reaches us.
Can I use these puzzles in my classroom?
Yes, use them with your class, your family, your club, or your care home, and print as many copies as you need. The one thing we ask is that you do not resell the sheets themselves.
